THE ILLUSION OF THE DASHBOARD

Changing Your Attribution Window Doesn't Change What Happened. Only What You're Told.

A 1-day, 7-day, or 28-day click window doesn't change what a platform actually recorded about a conversion. It only changes which slice of that record gets reported back to you.

The setting everyone touches, and what it actually does

Most ad platforms let you switch the attribution window in a dropdown, and the reported number visibly moves when you do. It's easy to read that shift as new information arriving. It isn't. The platform's underlying event log doesn't change when the window changes; only which subset of that log gets counted toward the total you're looking at.

Why the number moves without anything happening in the business

The platform generally sees more than it reports. A conversion window is a reporting choice about which touchpoints get credit, applied after the fact to data the platform already had. Two people looking at the same account with two different window settings are looking at two different reporting decisions, not two different realities. Neither is wrong. Neither is the full picture either.

What to check instead of hunting for the 'right' window

A dashboard that meaningfully shifts every time someone touches a dropdown isn't measuring the business differently. It's surfacing a different slice of the same platform-side model. The fix isn't finding the correct window setting. It's a verified conversion record built from your own order data, checked against whichever window number you're looking at, rather than trusting the window to eventually land on the truth.
